Trewerryn 2003
A report by Sue & Steve for West Cumbria Canoe Club.
The New Graveyard section shortly after the start: Grade 2-3 fairly
straight forward. Some large square boulders towards the end of the rapid give good Rock-Splat moves
!
After the Graveyard comes the Ski Jump, a two stage ramp fall with a
wave at the entrance micro eddy river right to allow access to the trough.
Below a much bigger wave / stopper, some bobbed through, others got thrashed.
Best line to clear and make the eddy, river right coming down river.

A paddler takes just about the perfect line to pierce the lower wave, to make the break out or to continue down river.

A Wild Ride Surfing the lower Ski Jump Wave !

Ms Davies Bridge: After the Ski Jump a short
bouncy rapid leads to the fall at Ms Davies Bridge. A V-Shoot with a wave folding from the left, best line through river right to make the breakout.

A Paddler takes the right line so avoiding the folding wave.Note the large eddy river right (recirculating) and the Rocks on the shoot exit (right) top of picture which can pin the unwary.

A playboater getting it right ! or wrong ?

The Cafe Play Wave : a little below Ms Davies bridge around a right sweeping corner is the Cafe Play Wave. If you like an Audience and can do those playboat moves this is THE place to be ! A great Surf wave. Note: below here there is a drop, so swimming is probably best avoided!

The Drop below the Cafe Play Wave and the lead up to Fingers Rapid

Fingers Rapid : 3 possible lines, The clear smooth ramp river left, The slot as in photo., or through the small haystacks river right.

One of the Rafts operating on the river (best avoided) Rafts use the two big eddies below fingers to manoeuvre and as a Get out point give them space !

The NRA National Rivers Authority footbridge Rapid: Below Fingers comes the NRA rapid very popular with playboaters ( though work is underway to tame this one a little ! ) relatively flat below a swimmer should be recovered o.k.
Chapel Falls one of the most powerful drops on the river comes below here.

Chapel Falls: A big drop, a meaty folding wave / stopper, and quite shallow with tow-back ! Good paddlers can get hurt here ( Worth getting out for a look first !)

The best line: as you come over the glassy lip of the fall a small V-Tongue can be seen centre-right ending in a curling / folding haystack, take this but aim to paddle out of it's righthand edge lean forward and keep paddling and you should punch into the breakout. Some Play this wave ! but not many...
This paddler is still rather too central.
Below Chapel falls, is the top campsite get-out / get-in. Meaning if staying on what is a very good campsite below the course, you can use the next short section of river down ( Which otherwise is not open ) this is much tamer now but still gives a few good play-holes and waves. A winding narrow section through wooded banks, the best couple of waves are early on, then a small wier, before the river goes under the campsite access road bridge, get out river right about 50m
below here... through the gate and follow the fence-line back to the campsite.
Ready for another Run down ? Happy Paddling !
